4)    how the subject of the poem applies to your life

3.     Post your analysis on my blog

4.     Choose any two different posts and evaluate the analysis of one of the poems in each of them. Do not pick the poems that you have analyzed in your post.

5.     Complete the evaluation form attached in the end of the assignment. Do not copy all the rubrics, just the criteria and the grade you are giving.

Every student's final grade will be the average of the teacher's assessment and peer evaluation. 20 points will be deducted if a student does not evaluate the peers' posts.

  1. We Are Cool
    1) My poem relates to the Criterions which will make us popular at school with our friends.
    2) The poets massage is that we shouldn't be hypocrite with our friends or with the kids around us, the song ends with the words "We Die soon" which describe sadness, anger and pain.
    • Repetition: There is a repetition of the word "WE" which describes and highlight the number of people in the song.
    • Symbolism: In the poem it's written: "We strike straight ", those lyrics symbolize the mutiny of teenagers this days. Against there parents, teachers or sometimes friends. In addition: when it's written: "We Die soon." the meaning is not physical death, but intellectual death and cultural death that will remain always.
    • Metaphor: It's written in the text: "We real cool. We Left school." Which describes the kind of people the songs relays to.
    4) The subject applies to my life as a teenager, because as a teenager I see many friends or other teenagers which act the same way as in the song.

  3. Fire & Ice
    1) This song relates (openly) to aspect of apocalypse, 2 different ways of how the world can be destroyed, but if we'll look one more time at the poem we'll notice nowadays apocalypse which is created by the mankind.
    2) The poet is trying to explain that the "fire and ice" that will destroy our world is actually – we, the mankind. Fire and ice present the unimportance of the future of our planet to us. The poet's message is that we'll care and save our planet from it apocalyptic future.
    3) Symbolism – Fire: desire
    Ice: hate
The real meaning of the end of the world in the song is that not the nature will destroy it, it is just a symbol to the destruction we create by us being to active (pollution) or being careless.
Repetition – "Some say …" used to present the choice of each person, will the world will end in fire or ice.

    4) In my opinion, this subject applies to all our generation. The worst present that mankind have, is our knowledge, we all know that one day we'll die and that one day the world that we are living in right now won't exist. Nowadays when the technology is developed faster and faster, the prophecies of the bible become logical, so I believe that this song is applies on my life a lot.

    Fire and Ice
    1. The poem relates to the aspect of how life on earth will end, it can end by two fatal ways- fire or ice.
    2. The poet’s massage is that life will end differently to each person, it depends on their point of view.
    3. There’s a clear repetition on the words fire and ice in order to emphasize the meaning of them- a great force that cannot be controlled.
    4. I think that I haven’t lived enough or experienced enough things to decide how I think the world will end, after all, it is pretty depressing to think about subjects like the end of the world.
    We Real Cool
    1. The poem relates to the aspect of life of "cool people", the poem describes what the cool kids do, and what eventually happens to them as a result of their actions.
    2. The poet's massage is that we shouldn't surrender to peer pressure, and shouldn't always feel like we have to do everyone else does, because sometimes, what the cool kids do- has a not cool result.
    3. There is a repetition on the word "we", that is supposed to make us feel as part of the song, feel like we experienced the experience the poet has described.
    4. The poem applies to me because middle and high school are the highlights of when a person is peer pressured. I think every student my age has experienced peer pressure, that’s why its important to talk about the subject in school, let pupils know they aren’t "the only one who is going threw these things". This song delivers a good massage and encourages people.

  5. We real cool
1.The song "We Real Cool" which was written by Gwendolyn Brooks relates to drugs and violent and peer pressure, the writer says that he and his friends has left school already, and nowadays they are going out at late hours and doing different bad things, moreover I can to conclude that the writer is not educated, he wrote "we real cool" while he should write "We are real cool", this fact support that the song is about negative motives. But the writer is aware of his situation, he knows that he does bad thing but probably due to peer pressure (he used the word "we") he is keeping doing them; "We Die soon."
    2. The poet's message is to not give up to peer pressure, the writer tries by writing this poet to prevent the readers doing his mistake; using drugs, getting into violent, drinking alcohol.
    3. Metaphor- "sing sin"
When the write said that he and his friend "sing sin" he meant that they aware of their bad things but they proud of it and saying it in voice.
    Irony-"We real cool…..We die soon"
The irony in the poet is although the writer says he cool he knows that he is not really cool, and by the acts which make him "cool" he hurt himself.
Repetition-The word "We" repeats at the text few time, the repetition emphasizes the fact that the writer doesn't do all this bad acts alone he does it with his friend, moreover the repetition emphasizes that the writer is under peer pressure and he does all this bad acts for be cool at his group –"we". By the repetition the writer success to convey his message, to make the reader to not give up peer pressure because it may destroy and hurt you.
    4. The subjects of the poem; violent and drugs and peer pressure apply my life as teenager. As teenager I am exposed to violent specially and to drugs, by this song I learn to try prevent myself experience these events. But as a teenager I am extremely exposed to peer pressure, my friends may do good things and Influence me to do good things too, or my friends may do bad things and that I should say "NO"; it what I learned from the poem: To make the different between bad peer pressure and good peer pressure and how to act in each situation.

  6. When I Was One-and-Twenty
1.The poem "when I was one-and-twenty" relates to growing up and becoming mature. When the writer was 21 years old he received a piece of advice, give money, give valuables but not his love and not his spirit. But he was young and he didn't follow the advice, what connect me to the aspect of growing up, the writer is mature, 21 years old at this age but still he is in growing up process and he still learn new things. At the end the writer feel in love this has brought pain and when he was 22 he understand the advice; Growing up means acquiring experience even when it is painful.
    2.The poet has few messages.
One of them is that he can everyday learn new thing no matter how old we are, the message is that growing up is acquiring experience even if pain sometime.
Anther message is that only after you going through experience you can appreciate the value of a piece of advice, the writer understood his mistakes just after he acquired experience moreover we learn that we can appreciate something just after we have lost it.
In addition I learn that material things has no value and the only value is who I am and what I feel.
    3. Symbolism:
    heart – love
21 – the age when people are considered mature, they have the same right like adults.
    Wise man – Experience
    Repetition:
The word "but" repeats few times at the song for emphasize how important the advice is and that he should take it seriously. But the writer was too young for understand the advice.
    Irony:
A person in age 21, the age which is the symbol of maturity, thought that he is mature enough for not listen wiser men than him, like the man who told him the advice. He thought that he is smart, he got good advice but he hasn't appreciated it so it hurt him.
    4. The subject of the poem, growing up applies to my life, I am in age of growing up, and I am getting bigger physically and mentally. At my age a lot of teenagers think that they know everything and they mature enough for do what they want and they don't appreciate what wiser people tell them, exactly like the writer. But during the years pass, we , me and everyone at this age will understand that we still are not mature enough for know better than anyone else.

Repetition: "But I was one-and-twenty" There is a repetition on the words one-and-twenty which describes how the man thinks in this age and to who he listens, in this song, the man doesn't listen to anyone but himself, which is not very wise as the wise man said.
    4) I am a teenager surrounded by teachers, big sisters and parents which tries to teach me and learn me how to act, live, dress and to make me a grown person, I know that I want to live my life my way and not there way, a thing which make my life harder but better, I know I should listen to them, but it is just to hard.

    Fire and Ice

    1) I guess the poet speaks about relations between different peoples’ in the world.
He also means the relations between people. As I can understand, both of them are negative because he compares two destructive phenomena: fire and ice.

    2) The message as I see it is the following:
Both the fire and the ice will destroy our world. The poet tries to show us that the wars, pain and sufferings will bring our world to its final days. He also wants to warn people that if they don’t take measures to save the world and humanity, the result will be the same.

    3) To convey his message to his readers he uses 2 metaphors :
    Fire- wars, conflicts between people.
    Ice- misunderstanding, hatred, indifference.
The comparison between them is to show us that both are destroying factors which lead to the end of human existence.

    Symbolism:
Fire- hate, pain, sufferings, murder, wars, conflicts, death.
Ice- separation, misunderstanding, lack of intrest to other people and environment.

4)In our everyday life we face the choice between fire and ice.
In Israel the political situation is very tense and dangerous especially in this south, for example in Ashdod, We are afraid of rockets coming from the Palistine Haza.
Sometimes people don’t care about most important event in our country and other people in trouble. For example: Gilad Shalit, a kidnapped soldier in Haza, needs our help and support to come back home. Everybody must do something about it.
Everyone can make a difference to save the world!!

They teach us that materialism isn't a good thing, that money and richness isn't what really matters, but the love and integrity.
2)The poet's message is that when we are young we should listen carefully to wise people, and understand that materialism stay only for a while, they need to understand that jewels and riches shouldn't be given too freely. 21. We Real Cool
This poem relates to the aspect of Life Style, it’s about having a bad life style which hurts as the end indicates: "We die soon". The poem is about people who do bad things like drinking too much alcohol, and always fighting and cursing, and those things will lead to a short life.
There is a personification in the poem, such as "We real cool". Also there is symbolism:"We sing sin". The word "sin" is symbol to cursing.
Another poetic mean in the poem is metaphor; "Jazz June". These are two different words, not related at all to each other. Jazz can be translated as doing whatever you want, because jazz music is a way of expressing yourself. June always indicates that the summer vacation is right behind the corner, so combined, these two words mean, "Do what you want when it's summer vacation time".
The subject of the poem relates to my life by telling me that even if I think am cool, and if I drink a lot alcohol and cursing and fighting, it's not a healthy life style and I might get by living it.

    Fire and Ice
This poem talks about the aspect of destruction and death. The poets message is that there a lot of disagreements in the world, and people fight each other because of them. The writer says that the world is filled with hate, and society will eventually collapse because of it. Even if one side wins the argument, there will be another disagreement in that side, which can cause another more destruction and misery to both sides.
One poetic mean in this poem is metaphor. The world is a metaphor to society, and fire and ice are two fighting parties, first, one of the parties will win, but if there will be another war, the second party will win.
There is also repetition, the words "fire" and "ice" are mentioned two times, to emphasize their meaning.
The subject of the poem applies on my life, because in our times the world is full of hatred and wars, and even if one side win, the other will seek vengeance, which costs a lot of innocent lives.

    2. "The Road Not Taken"-
-The song relates to peer pressure in my opinion , because the poet writes that he saw 2 roads , one with a lot of people , and one almost empty , he chose the empty one.
-That people should not be affected by others, they have to do what they choose to do.
    - The symbols in the song are – The wood which symbolizes the life , the road that was more travelled by is the bad road – the bad things people (usually teenagers) choose to do in their lives
-I had to choose things in my life as well , and it is quite hard to do the right choice and do the right way , but eventually it pays off.

  33. Poetry analysis by Barak

    Fire and Ice:

    1) The aspect of life that we get from this poem is the end. How will it all end? In what way? Another aspect is opposites. Everything can end in a few very different ways, and we can't know until its finished.
    2) The poet's message is - You cannot know how things end, because you are not there until it actually ends. All you can do is guess, hope and wait.
    3) Simile - the simile is that we can't always get what we want, we have to do well with what we have and not complain.
Symbolism - The two options of the ways the world will end, are actually about life. You can go through two paths, and you don’t know what to choose until you get to the split.
    4) I personally don't know what to do about my close future - should I take the academy class? or the electronics class? I am really sure that I'll figure it out when I'll get to the point of choosing.

    We Real Cool:

    1) The aspect of life in this poem is drugs. In the poem, we see a bunch of kids who left school, do sins and hit people talk with mistakes, and at the end we see "We die soon". They know they will die, and we know they do drugs. The aspect is also education.
    2) The poet's message is - You should never do drugs. People who do drugs feel good, but they realize that they are going to die and feel sorry for doing what they did. The poet tells us to refuse to tempting things that will finally hurt us.
    3) Simile - the simile is that drugs make you feel good at the beginning but also kills you before your time. You should always think about the future before doing a move, and then take it.
Irony - we can see that the poem is spelled wrong, and that shows us the situation of the kids in it.
Repetition - we see that the word "We" repeats itself, and that shows us that this group of kids has to stay together to make it. They can't be separated, or they will stop being who they are.
    4) The subject of the poem applies to my life. I've been educated to stay away from drugs, or anything that will tempt me into hurting myself. Unfortunately, there are many examples of drugged people among us… and the most of them are not anymore.

3.The writer convey his message by using poetic means:
    * Ironic

    1. I think that the poem relates to teenager's social life.
    2. The people want to be popular, they want to have "popular" friends and for this purpose sometimes they forget who are them, and want to do the things that the others, "the popular persons" are doing. They don't pay attention to the real important things in their lives.
    3. In this poem the author is use metaphor. Jazz June is usually used as poetic slang for to waste out time or relax throughout the month of June.
To my mind, the word "cool" in this poem is the example of symbolism. It symbolizes the spokesmen's fake dreams.
The author uses the pronoun "we" every sentence. This is the example of repetition.
This song has a lot of irony. The people want to be popular, they want a good life and in the end of the story they died as a result of theirs previous lives.
    4. On my opinion the poet refers to social life of teenagers in my age. It knows that for teenagers it is very important to be a popular. To be cool it's drink alcohol, and left school and has fun in the evenings. All this features are demonstrating the "cool teenagers" today.

    Fire and Ice
    1. The poem refers to philosophies of life.
    2. The "Fire and Ice" are two main features of human personality. The fire is the symbol of: feelings, love, warm person, kind and care. And the ice is the symbol of: cool person, indifference, hate. These are two different and radical forms of human personality. The poet uses these symbols to show us that the radical forms may destroy ours lives and world.
    3. The words "ice" and fire" repeats several times in the poem. It is repetitions.
These words are also symbols of human personality components.
    4. I think that the poem's message that I mentioned before is important not only to my life, but also to every person's life.
